Mistakes: Chapter 4: Changes

Chapter 4: Changes

“Are you really wearing that out?” Jacob lay in bed and eyed Angela as she strapped her red high heels on to complete her outfit. She looked down at herself; she had completed her Halloween costume and was dressed as Rainbow Brite. The dress was a little short and her feet were going to be killing at the end of the night, but she thought she looked cute.

“What’s the matter with it?” she pouted?

“You look hot!” he exclaimed. “Every one is going to be looking at you.” She beamed and crawled on the bed so that she was straddling him.

“Well, I will be looking at you.” He pulled her down and kissed her. She sat back up and patted his bare chest. “Now get up and get ready. Amy will be by with the twins in a couple minutes.” She climbed off him and clopped into the living room to wait on Amy.

Ten minutes later the doorbell rang and she opened it to be greeted by Amy and Devon and the twins.

“Trick or treat.” Devon said holding Abe who was dressed as Scooby Doo, and Amy held Abbey who was dressed as Tinkerbell.

“Oh, they are adorable.” She squealed as she reached for Abbey and ushered them in the door. “How’s my little princess?” she nuzzled Abbey who squealed with delight. She handed Abbey back to Amy then took Abe. She threw him up in the air and he squealed too. “And my little Scooby Doo, you are so cute.” She bounced him on her hip. “So are you guys coming out tonight?” Devon moved to Amy’s side and wrapped his arm around her.

“Nah, I think we are going to take the munchkins home and get ready for bed.” Devon said.

“Aw, I thought your parents were going to watch them so you guys could come.” Angela pouted.

“Well, we were, but dragging them around all night is really tiring.” Amy said. “Sorry, Ang.”

“Oh, it’s ok.” She sighed.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.” Jake came through the hall, using his best Joker voice. Abbey buried her head in her mom’s shoulder and Abe clapped his hands and squealed.

“So, I see you wear suckered into it?” Devon slapped his shoulder.

“Yeah, Drunk RT wasn’t going to work for Ms. Brite over here. So you guys not coming?” Jake took Abe who had been reaching out for him. “Well hello little one.” Abe touched his white face and when the paint rubbed off turned around to show his dad.

“I don’t think he knows what to think about you.” Devon laughed at his son. Abbey started to cry when she turned to look at Jake.

“Ah, Abbey, don’t cry, it’s just Jake.” Angela rubbed her back.

“We should probably be going, on that note.” Amy bounced Abbey.

“Yeah, man, we will have to take a rain check on this one.” Devon said taking Abe from him. “But you guys have fun and be careful.”

“We will. Thanks for stopping by!” she kissed Amy on the cheek and ruffled Abbey’s hair.

“Call me if you need a sober ride home.” Amy whispered as she kissed her friend’s cheek. “I’ll send Devon to pick you up.”

Angela smiled. “Thanks, Aim, that’s nice of you.” She kissed baby Abbey’s head and straightened her Tinkerbell wing. “But we will be fine!”

Once they cleared out Angela grabbed her camera and shoved her important cards, driver license and credit card into Jacob’s pocket.

“Let’s go. Molly said she would save us a seat. Her friend from Morristown was coming down.”

“I bet he was.” Jacob mumbled and took her hand.

“What was that?” she asked.

“Nothing, let’s roll.”

The Smoky Mountain Brewery was pumping when they arrived. Ghouls and girls in all sorts of undress were packing in. A band dressed as Kiss was playing on stage. They fought their way to a table in the back where Molly and Luke sat with another girl Angela did not recognize. Molly was dressed as Cleopatra and Luke was dressed as Indiana Jones. The other girl had on a T-shirt that read, “This is my costume.”

“Hey, look who made it!” Molly exclaimed holding her drink up. “We thought you two might be to busy to make come.” she sipped on her mixed drink. Jacob pulled out a barstool and Angela leaned up against him. John walked up with two drinks in his hand and handed one to the girl in the T-shirt.

“Wow! You look great, boss.” He complimented. Jake bowed his head in thanks. “Guys, this is my wife, Lily.” She smiled and waved. All of a sudden a gorilla came out of nowhere and picked Angela up and tossed her over his shoulder and wooed and awed and danced around with her, while she screeched and beat on his back. Finally the gorilla sat her down in a fit of giggles. She pulled the head off him to find Mike laughing hysterically. She punched him in the gut and he doubled over, then she turned and punched Jacob.

“Thanks for your help.” She exclaimed. He laughed and pulled her close. “Eww, don’t you kiss me with that makeup on your face.” She pushed him away. He laughed and kissed her cheek anyway, then got up and walked to the bar to get them drinks.

“Mike you are a giant ass!” she pouted hopping up on the chair. Mike laughed and leaned up against the table.

“Couldn’t resist, you looked so cute.” He pinched her cheek but she knocked him away.

“Well, if the ape’s show is over, we thought we would come and say hi.” Bridgette swaggered up wearing a sultry Catholic school girl outfit, followed by Dave dressed as a priest. Angela rolled her eyes.

“Howdy do, Bridgette Big Boobs!” Drunk Molly greeted. “That’s what we call you, you know.” Bridgette stuck her chest out and popped her hip.

“Well, I take that as a compliment.” She flipped her hair and glared at Angela. Jacob walked back up and handed Angela a Long Island Iced Tea and took a drink of his own beer.

“Hellooooo……… “ Bridgette smirked at Jacob. “Dave, go get me a drink.” She told him.

“But you have a full one.” He protested.

“Dave, another drink, now.” She demanded and he slinked away to the bar.

“You could be a little nicer to him.” Angela said.

“Oh, is that so?” Bridgette laughed. “I don’t think it’s any of your business.” She stuck her nose up and walked around her till she was between Jacob and Molly. She leaned on the table in a way where her boobs we spilling out of her top.

“So, you look good even in all that make up.” She twirled her hair while trying to talk to Jacob.

“So, Luke, where’s your wife tonight?” Jacob asked trying to divert Bridgette. He put he arm around Angela’s waist and pulled her closer.

“It’s not going to work.” Bridgette said.

“Ah…. She is at home with the baby.” Luke said. Angela glared at Bridgette.

“Baby? I didn’t know you guys had a kid.” Jacob tried to ignore Bridgette and her boobs. Finally he glanced down.

“Yeah, that’s right, you know you want them.”

“That’s it.” Angela exclaimed and started around the table. But Jacob held her.

“Not worth it.” he whispered.

“Not worth it my ass.” Angela fumed. “I’m going to kick her ass.” Bridgette laughed. “Oh you think it’s funny? You like messing with other people’s man.” Bridgette shrugged. “Or is it you just like my seconds?” She yelled as Dave walked back up in the middle of the cat fight. Jacob’s mouth dropped slightly and glanced at Dave then back to her.

“I just want what I want.” Bridgette said.

“You slept with Dave?”

“OOOHHHH!!!!” Molly laughed.

“Shut up, Molly.” Angela shot at her. ‘Bridgette you are a slut, and,” she faced Jacob, “please don’t make a big deal about this.” Dave sly slid in behind Bridgette and set her drink down and he glared at Jacob.

“You slept with Dave.” Jacob repeated.

“Man, you say that like I have some kind of disease or something.” Dave spoke up attempting to defend himself. Jacob shook his head.

“No, it’s not that, it’s just….” He trailed off.

“Oh, did she forget to tell you. Wonder who else she forgot to tell you about?” Bridgette encouraged.

“I don’t know.” He looked at her, “Who else, Angela.” Angela blushed and turned and stormed off. She had thought this was a long forgotten conversation

“Bridgette, you are a mean, mean girl.” She heard Molly say as she stormed off. She can not believe this was happening again. Damn Bridgette, why did she have to stir up trouble? She found her self out side huffing in her anger.

“Angie,” she heard him come after her.

“What,” she yelled and several people passing stared. “What do you want? Do you want me to sit down and make you a list?”

“You said three.”

“Yeah, three from the office, geez.” She tossed her hands up.

“I’m sorry, I just never thought it was anyone who still worked there.”

“Well, excuse me, maybe you can fire him on Monday.” She shot at him.

“No, Angie, it’s not like that.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” She shivered as a wind blew up her skirt. “Please tell me what it’s about.”

“I want to know who else from the office.”

“You are really doing this.” She stomped her foot. “Fine, his name was Eric and he is gone.” She glared at him. “Happy?” she stormed off, but turned back to him.

“Don’t follow me this time. Just leave me alone.” This time she stormed back in and headed to the bar. She got the bartender’s attention and ordered a shot. She slammed it and signaled for another.

“Looks like you are having some man trouble.” She turned to look at the man beside her and her breath caught. There he sat with his shaggy blonde hair in his face and his piercing blue eyes staring back at her. Another shot appeared in front of her and she took it without ever taking her eyes of him. He smiled at her.

“You look good.” He said. “Want another?” she nodded and he signaled the bartender for two. “To us.” He cheered once the drinks appeared in front of them. She took hers too, then wiped her mouth.

“What the hell are you doing here?” she exclaimed at him. He chuckled.

“I live here.” He said.

“No, you don’t.” she shook her head. “You left, you can’t be here.” She sank onto the bar stool and dropped her head into her hands. Her heart felt like it was going to pound out of her chest. “Oh geez! Why are you here?”

“My mom died.” He said. Her head popped up.

“Aw, god, I’m so sorry.” She swallowed hard.

“Nah, don’t be, she’s not suffering any more.” She just nodded.

“So, who’s he?” he nodded towards Jake who was back at the table taking a shot of his own with Bridgette and Molly.

“My…. Boss.” She finally stuttered.

“Your boss?” he questioned, “You always get into fights like that with your boss at the bar?”

“Well, no.” she stuttered. “I mean, he’s not only my boss.”

“Ah, I see.”

“Well, what did you expect.” She slammed the shot glass down on the counter. “Did you expect me to wait around for you?”

“No, Angie, not at all.” He shook his head.

“Why did you do it? Why did you leave?” she questioned, she could feel the tears brimming up. “No,” she shook her head. “I don’t want to know. I have moved on and you are a selfish ass hole, Nicholas Lawson. Just like every one told me.” She grabbed his beer and chugged some of it then stormed off from him. Not wanting to go back to the table where Jake was now dancing with Bridgette she stormed to the ladies room.

After she had slammed her self into the stall she heard someone stagger in and bump up against her door.

“Ooops. Sorry.” She heard Molly giggle.

“It’s ok.” She rolled her eyes.

“Angie, is that you?” Molly asked.

“Yeah, Mol, it’s me.”

“OOO….. who was the hottie at the bar? I saw you knocking on back with him. You are on fire.” She giggled.

“No one, Mol.” She wiped the tears from her eyes. “He was no one.”

“If he’s no one, care to introduce me?” she slurred her words a little. “I don’t think me and Luke are going to work out. You know, with the kid and all.”

“So that’s the big Secret.” She thought. “Molly and Luke.”

“Well, you better get back out there and get Bridgette off your man.”

“Yeah, I better do that.”

When she walked back out of the bathroom, the band had stopped playing and the judges were announcing any one who wanted to be in the costume contest to come to the stage and register. She spotted Mike making his way to the stage putting on his best gorilla. She wiggled her way through the crowd back to the table. When she got there Dave was pulling Bridgette back from Jacob and she had a huge smile plastered on her face. Jacob turned around and stared at her. Half his makeup had sweated off.

“Take me home.” She said to him and then walked back through the crowd. She risked a glance at the bar and caught Nick’s eye. He winked at her and she walked faster.

In the car, Jacob tried talking to her, but she sat silently the whole time. When they got to her apartment she jumped out of the car as fast as she could. She let him follow her to the door and open it because he had her key. Once she was in she quickly turned and slammed it in his face and locked the dead bolt and the chain lock.

“Come on!” she heard him yell from out side. The door clicked open, but the chain lock caught it. “Angie, let me in.” she stared at him through the crack.

“I think you should just go home.” She told him.

“Angie, no.” he pleaded. “I don’t want to leave like this.”

“Just leave.” She turned and walked down her hallway to her bed room and slammed that door. She could hear him still yelling after her, but she ignored him and turned the TV on.

Her cell phone woke her up. She rose up and looked at the clock. It was 2 in the morning. Her cell read a number she did not recognize.

“Hello.” She answered sleepily.

“So, I see you still have the same cell phone number.” At the sound of his voice she sat straight up.

“What do you want?”

“I take it you still live in the same apartment too.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Because there is a very drunk Joker passed out in front of your door.”

“Shit.” She cussed and hung up the phone. She still had on her short dress so she grabbed her bath robe and padded down the hall. She slid of the chain lock and opened the door. Sure enough Jacob was passed out leaning up against the railing with a half drunk bottle of Jack Daniels beside him, and Nick stood there with his hands in his pocket beaming.

“Damn it.”

“Rough night, sweetheart.” He smirked.

“Help me get him in.” she insisted. He laughed.

“I don’t think so.” He brushed past her and walked into her apartment. She sighed and tried with all her might to drag Jacob in. She heard Nick cat calling behind her as her robe rose up, revealing her thong underwear. Not being able to budge Jacob’s weight she marched to the couch where Nick sat and grabbed the blanket from behind his head and covered Jacob up the best she could with it.

“He’s going to be sick.” She shot at Nick as she slowly closed the door behind her.

“Not my problem.” He replied.

“What do you want?” she asked as she locked the door. She jumped a little when she turned around and he was behind her. He pushed her up against the door and kissed her. She didn’t try to fight him, knowing it would do no good. When he finally pulled away and swaggered back to the couch she had a hard time catching her breath.

“I have been dying to do that every since I saw you walk in wearing that sexy little dress.” He made himself comfortable on her couch while she stood there, still not believing that after all these years he was back in her living room.

“Come sit down.” He finally said and she obeyed but sat on the corner farthest from him. He quickly slid over to her and tossed his arm over her shoulders. “I probably woke you. Do you want me to take you to bed?”

“No.” she gasped. He chuckled.

“Are you sure?” he traced his finger across her cheek bone. She shivered. “No, my boyfriend is passed out right outside the door.”

“Will you go to bed with me if I bring him in?” he sighed.

“Yes.” She sighed in relief and he smiled and stood. “Wait, no.” she realized her mistake. “Not with you.”

“Well, I’m defiantly not putting Joker in your bed.”

“Just bring him in.” she demanded. He opened the door and picked Jacob up quite easily and carried him to the couch and tossed him on it. He mumbled something but did not wake.

“There,” he motioned to him. “There’s your boyfriend.” He watched her gather the blanket from the door stoop and cover him with it. “You missed the shit he was doing with that blonde chick. I was tempted to go punch him myself.” She glared at him.

“But I didn’t have to, the other guy did.” She gasped and searched Jacob’s face for bruising.

“The one dressed as a priest. But don’t fret, he missed and hit the one in the gorilla suit instead.”

“Shit.” She exclaimed. “He’s getting the makeup all over my couch.” She walked to the kitchen to get a towel. She came back and wiped some of the makeup off his face. She sighed and kissed his forehead. Nick has disappeared, hoping he had taken the high road and left she turned out the lights and headed back to her bedroom.

Nick lay naked on her bed.

“Oh no, you don’t.” she exclaimed.

“Fine,” he sat up and pulled his boxers back on. “But can I at least sleep here, seeing as I have no where else to go?”

“No.” she said.

“Come on,” he pleaded. “I will be good.”

“Fine,” she heard her self giving in, “But not in my bed.”

“But the couch is taken.” He laid back down and pulled the sheet over him. “Look I will take the sheet and you take the comforter. I want even touch you.” She stood in the door way for a moment the sighed and walked to her side of the bed. She flipped out the bed side light before taking her robe off and quickly wiggling out of the tight dress. She wanted to find a night gown, but not wanting to turn the light back on, slid under the comforter in the bra and panties.

“See, not so bad.” He said through the dark.

“Just be quite.” She said, guilt washing over her.
