Chapter 3: The Words
Amy is supposed to come back to work tomorrow. Abbey and Abe
are 3 months old and she thinks she is ready to leave them.
They are such precious babies. Abbey has a heart murmur, but
should be ok now. I am glad that Amy is coming back, Molly and
I have been working our tails off. We have been swamped lately.
We have had Devon, John, and Jacob playing CSR these
past couple months. Which makes for an interesting time.
Jacob and I are doing great. I have stayed at his house a lot
this past month. That is why I have not written. He has a cute
little house off Lovell Rd. Rick comes down more frequently
from corporate. He knows that it is me Jake is dating, just
from process of elimination. But Jacob has held up his end and
is very fair when it comes to all of us. But I think he has been
coming down more often just to make sure. Molly and Brad
had a huge fight also and are currently separated. Brad
moved to the Johnson City Branch and John has took his
role temporarily as Tech Supervisor. Molly wanted to move
to Morristown, but they denied her, seeing as Amy has been
out and all. But I think there is more to it than all that. Jacob
knows something, but he will not tell me. Molly said that she isn’t
to upset about it because they have been on the brink for years.
Which surprised me because they always seemed like a happy couple.
She told me to be careful because working with your loved one
takes a toll on you no matter what. But I really think Jake and I are
different because we are truly boss and employee at work.
Rick says this is part of the reason he “Frowns upon” office relationships,
because of these awkward situations that come up when someone breaks up.
But, on a lighter note, Halloween is coming up and we are all
planning to join the costume contest up at the Brewery.
I am going as Rainbow Brite and Jake says he
Is going as a drunk respiratory therapist. But I am
trying to convince him to be The Joker.
Well, it’s time for me to hit the sack. No Jake tonight.
He was going out with his best friend who has been away
for boot camp so I headed home. So night-night.
Angela’s cell phone beeped at 8:45 am.
From Amy:
So sorry! Running late. Tell you about it when I get in.
To Amy:
It’s ok. Take your time.
Fifteen minutes later, Amy finally breezed in the door looking harassed and exhausted. Jake had been in the middle of a lecture to Molly and Angie about taking more time to complete their paperwork before turning it in, but he stopped when he saw Amy.
“I am so sorry.” She dropped her stuff by her desk and rummaged in her desk for her badge. Finding it, she turned to the time clock and clocked in. “Abbey would not stop crying after I dropped her off with mom and I just couldn’t leave her.”
“Amy, are you sure you are ready for this?” Jake asked her.
“I have to be, my maternity leave is up and we need the money.” She plopped down in her chair and turned on her computer.
“Look if you aren’t ready I can call Rick and see if we can get it extended.” He offered.
“No, really, I have to do this sooner or later.” She faked a smile.
“Ok, but you just let me know.” She nodded. Forgetting his lecture he turned and walked back to his office.
Amy did not say much the whole day. She pulled her share of work rather quietly except when she was on the phone begging Devon to drive by and check on the babies. It wasn’t until 4:45 that she emailed Angela.

Ang,
I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for being a terrible friend these past couple months. I never thought it would be this hard. But thank you for being understanding. I have not had a chance to ask you how you and Jake are. Why don’t we do dinner one night this week and we can catch up?

Amy,
First all you don’t have to apologize to me, I know you have had your hands full. You have been my best friend for many years and a couple months of distance because you have two beautiful babies to take care of isn’t going to change that. Honestly, Jake has helped pass the time without you. He even came out here and gossiped with me and Molly. And I tell you what, I know you have not had time to relax, so why don’t we make a day of it Saturday. We will leave the babies with the boys and we will go have a day of it. Then I can cook dinner for all of us. Plus we have a lot of gossip to catch up on!

Ang,
You are amazing! Thank you. We have a date! OMG, I can’t believe Jake gossiped! What was it? Can I pick on him for it? And we do have to catch up. What is up with Molly and Brad?

Aim,
Yes, please give him a hard time! He told us that Dave was mad at Mike because he thought he was hitting on Bridgette. I will tell you about the rest later.

“Well, how do you think Amy’s first day back went?” Jacob asked Angela as they lay in bed together on Monday night. She rested her head on his shoulder and rubbed his chest.
“Okay, I suppose. She called her mother like 100 times to check on the babies.” He laughed. “And that was before lunch.”
“How are things with her and Devon?” he dared to ask. She shrugged.
“I honestly don’t know. All she talks about any more is Abe and Abbey.”
“Hmm… well, I guess mother hood brings out different things in you.”
She poked him in the ribs, “Like what, makes you not want to gossip as much?”
“Yea, something like that.”
“I miss gossiping with Amy.” She sighed.
“I know, you can’t tell her everything she wants to know about our love life anymore because how many times the baby pooped last night is more important now.” She propped her self up on her elbow and glared down at him.
“I’ll have you know, I never told her any of the details about our relationship.” She informed him. “She guessed most of it and pleaded enough till I told her the rest.” She smiled.
“Oh, right,” he chuckled, “I am sure that pregnant Amy twisted you arm and sat on you till you screamed monkey.” She bellied laughed at him.
“That is the silliest thing I have ever heard.”
“What, you Uncle Donnie never said that?”
“I don’t think I have an Uncle Donnie.” She thought about it. She shook her head and lay back down on his shoulder.
“Well, my uncle would end every story he told with, “well, twist my arm till I scream monkey.” He mocked in a deep voice. “We never understood why, it never made any sense now that I think about it. Dad, said he was crazy, and then claimed credit for coining the phrase, “You can go to college when your rich uncle gets out of the poor house.” She busted up laughing again.
“I love it!” she chuckled. “I love hearing you tell stories.”
“Yeah, I like telling them to you too.”
“Turn out the light and tell me a bed time story.” She yawned. He reached over and switched off the bed side table.
“Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who sat at her desk every day by the window. She waited for many years for her prince to come take her away. Finally one day he arrived in his black Beemer and his white lab coat. And they lived happily ever after in Uncle Donnie's cabin.”
“Good night.” She reached up and kissed his cheek. “I love you.”
He just held her for a minute, after a while, he realized he was holding his breath too.
“You said it, you know.” He whispered.
“Hmmm…. I guess I did.” She pulled the sheet up over her and snuggled into him. He heard her breathing steady as she quickly fell asleep.
“Guess your bedtime story has a happy ending.” He said aloud to no one. He kissed the top of her head and adjusted his pillow. After several hours, he finally dozed off.
