Davis was a curious little
puppy. He set out to make every day a new adventure.
Today was a special day and
he hoped for a special adventure. As today is Christmas Eve.
His boy, Seth, has asked for
a special gift this year and Davis is determined to find Santa Claus to make
sure Seth gets that brand new, red, shiny bike he has been hinting at for the
past month.
So Davis set off early that
morning looking for Ole St. Nick and his famous red nosed reindeer.
First place he decided to
look was under Seth’s bed. All he found there was a dirty old sock. He growled
and shook the sock viscously for a few minutes before remembering his original
mission.
Find Santa.
Next place to look was down
in the basement. Seth’s mom often found lost things when she went down there.
He snuck through the door behind mom as she was going down to start a load of
laundry. He sniffed around and around. His nose lead him underneath the steps.
Where he found a box. Upon investigation he found a box of old toys. In it he
found a stuffed bear and he pulled it out. He was trotting back towards the
steps with his prize so he could go and show Seth when he remembered what he
was supposed to be looking for.
Santa Claus.
He dropped the bear and
started out sniffing again. But he had been spotted.
“Davis.” mom yelled. “Back up
stairs. There’s nothing down here for you.” he glanced to mom. Barked once and
trotted back up the stairs. If Santa was hiding in the basement, mom would
know. And she had said there was nothing down here.
His next step was to look
outside. He often found goodies under the porch or near the woods.
He ran to the front door
barking and scratching until mom came to let him out. He jetted outside barking
and running in circles. It was cold outside and white fluffy stuff fell from
the sky. He barked at the white stuff as it landed on his nose and in his fur.
Finally he remembered why he wanted to come outside.
To look for Santa.
He shook his body to get the
white stuff off then flew around the back of the house to the edge of the
woods. He started sniffing the area. It did not take him long to find treasure.
An old orange toy car lay abandoned by the bushes. He picked it up in his mouth
and began trotting happily back to the house.
Then he remembered.
He needed to find Santa.
He dropped the car and headed
off for his next place. Under the porch.
He was sniffing near the edge
when he heard it.
“HIIIIISSSS MEEEOWWW!!”
He knew that sound! CAT!
Ha started barking as a black
blur ran from under the porch. He took off after it, barking the whole way.
He chased her all the way to
the edge of the yard until she ran up a tree. She sat on a branch and hissed at
him from her high perch, where he could not reach her. He growled back at the
cat, showing his teeth.
“Davis.” he heard Seth yelling. “Davis, where are you?”
Seth was calling. And then he
remembered.
He needed to find Santa and
the stupid cat had distracted him again.
But Seth was calling. He had
to answer. He trotted back towards the house and towards Seth. He was defeated
anyways. He had ran out of places to look.
“Davis, we made cookies for Santa.” Seth told him. “He should
be here soon. Come and see.”
He follows Seth into the
sitting room where the big magic box played.
“Santa Claus has been spotted in our town. It seems he
needed to make a stop at the Quick Mart for some reindeer food.” the lady on
the magic box reported. The it showed him. The jolly fat man stood in front of
the fill station feeding his reindeer.
And the good news, Davis knew
where that station was. He had been there with Seth and mom. It was close by
home.
He yipped and spun in
cirlces. He could run there and catch Santa. Then he could tell Santa to make
sure Seth gets his bike for Christmas.
“Yip, Yip, Yip.” he barked and scratched at the door again.
“You just went out, Davis.” Seth told him.
“Yip, Yip, Yip.” he jumped up and down.
“Fine.” Seth relented. “But hurry, it’s going to be dark
soon and we have to go to bed so Santa will come.”
The door opened and he flew
out of the house, down the porch steps, and all the way to the end of the drive
way. When he got there, he looked back to make sure Seth was back in the house.
He was. It was quiet out as the sun was starting to sink. He knew he had just a
few minutes to get to the fill station and find Santa. He wasn’t going to
forget this time. He repeated it over and over.
Find Santa. Find Santa. Find
Santa.
Off he went. Down the road
heading towards the fill station. He ran and ran and ran.
It did not take him long to
realize he was lost. The fill station was not where it should be and Santa was
no where in sight.
He slowed to a trot and began
to look around.
Suddenly, he saw someone who
could help. The snowman from the show he had watched last night with Seth. He
took all the misfit toys to Santa, surely he could guide him to Santa as well.
He ran up to the snowman. He
barked happily at him and wagged his tell. The snowman just sat there. Davis
danced around the snowman and yipped at him. Still nothing. He pawed gently at
him and begin to whine. Still, the snowman did not respond. A car pulled up and
a door slammed, startling him. He ran off glancing back once to see if the
snowman was going to follow. But he just sat there with his black eyes starting
out into the distance.
It was near dark now, and he
was cold. How was he going to get home. Seth was going to be worried. And he
had not found Santa yet.
Then he heard it. He could
not believe his ears. But he knew he had heard it. Ringing bells and the HOHOHO
the jolly man often made.
Davis took off towards the
sound.
And he saw him! He saw Santa!
Red suit, red sleigh, and the reindeer, led by the red nosed one!! He was on
the rooftop two houses down. Davis was so excited. He took off towards the
house, barking the whole way.
When he reached the house,
Santa was about to slide down the chimney with his big red bag. But he paused
and looked down at Davis.
“Well,” Santa chuckled. “Good evening, Davis.” Davis wagged
his tail. “Wait there for me, and I will take you home.” Santa winked at Davis,
then twinkled his nose and disappeared down the chimney.
He had done it. He had found
Santa. He smiled and wagged his tail faster. He sat patiently and waited. In a
few minutes, Santa reappeared on the roof. He climbed into his sleigh and
glided the reindeer to the ground beside Davis. Santa bent down and picked
Davis up. Davis was so excited, he licked Santa in the face. Then he remembered
why he was looking for the jolly man.
Red bike for Seth. He barked
twice.
Santa said, “Ho, Ho, Ho.” and
patted his head. “I know, Davis. Seth’s bike is in my bag.” he pointed to the
giant red bag behind him in the sleigh. “I can’t take you straight home, I
still have a few stops to make. But you can stay here in the sleigh while I
deliver toys to all the good boys and girls.”
So Davis rode beside Santa as
he went from house to house. He had a fluffy red blanket to curl up in while
Santa went down chimney after chimney to leave his toys for the children. Santa
even brought him back a couple nibbles of cookie and a glass of milk.
Finally they landed on the
rooftop of his own house where he played with Seth.
This time, Santa gathered
Davis up in one arm, and his big red bag in another. He twinkled his nose and
they where then standing in the living room. The talking box was silent and the
house was quite. But the Christmas tree was lit up in shades of color. The
cookies Seth had made sat on the table by the tree.
Davis was so tired that when
Santa sat him down he turned in a couple circles and plopped down under the
tree and was fast asleep before Santa even opened the big red bag.
Davis woke to thundering footsteps.
What was it. He wondered.
It’s Christmas Day. He
remembered his night with Santa and jumped up and yipped.
The red bike. And there is
was. He spotted it sitting on the other side of the tree with a big red bow in
the handle bars and so did Seth and he thundered into the room. Seth shrieked
and ran to his new bike. Mom, Dad, and brother Aaron followed to see what Santa
had left them.
Seth reached down to pat him
and he licked his hand. He was so happy. He found Santa, Seth got his new bike,
and he got to ride in the sleigh and meet the reindeer.
“Look Davis,” Seth said. “Santa didn’t forget you.” Seth
pushed the biggest bone he had ever seen to him. Davis barked happily and sat
down to chew on his bone. Today was a happy day.
Today is Christmas Day.
Merry Christmas, Santa
Merry Christmas Rogers
Family.
And Davis fell back to sleep
on his new bone.
